Indiana Court Records

The Indiana State Courts website is an informational hub designed to help introduce users to the hierarchy and structure of the Indiana Judicial System. Court cases may be filed in trial courts, consisting of the Town or City Courts, Circuit Courts, and Superior Courts. In some cases, appeals from the local courts may proceed to the Court of Appeals or the Supreme Court. Indiana also has a separate Tax Court with exclusive jurisdiction over cases involving state tax laws.

Town and City Courts have limited jurisdiction, handling ordinance violations, misdemeanors, and infractions. Circuit and Superior Courts have general jurisdiction over state- or county-level civil and criminal matters, as well as de novo appeals ("do-over" trials) from city and town courts. The Court of Appeals reviews appeals from the trial courts, except for certain cases, such as life-without-parole cases, which go directly to the Supreme Court. Both appellate courts have the constitutional authority to review and revise sentences issued by lower courts.

Many court records are publicly available under the State of Indiana's Access to Public Records Act (APRA) and Rules on Access to Court Records. However, some records may be restricted for confidentiality reasons. Court records revealing minors' identities and the personal identifying information of witnesses or victims fall into this category. This resource does not constitute legal advice or official records.
