Dubois County, Indiana, is a south-central Indiana county with Jasper as its county seat. The county court system generates a continuous body of official records — spanning criminal prosecutions, civil disputes, family matters, and probate proceedings — that serve as the foundation for legal accountability and public transparency. These records contain case filings, court orders, judgments, hearing transcripts, pleadings, and other documents produced during legal proceedings. Knowing how to access these records efficiently depends on understanding which court maintains them, what search tools are available, and what fees or restrictions may apply.

Residents and researchers looking for Indiana court case information can begin through IndianaStateCourts.us, which provides guidance on locating publicly available case records, clerk offices, and online court search tools across the state. Court records can be accessed through official online portals, the clerk’s office at the courthouse, or written record requests, depending on the type of case and whether the record is public.

Are Court Records Public in Dubois County?

Court records in Dubois County are presumed public under the Indiana Access to Public Records Act (APRA), IC § 5-14-3. APRA defines a public record broadly as any material created, received, retained, maintained, or filed by or with a public agency. This definition encompasses a wide range of court documents, from criminal case filings to civil judgments and probate inventories.

However, APRA contains statutory exemptions that limit access to certain categories of records. Under Indiana law, the following types of records are generally restricted from public inspection:

  • Juvenile court proceedings and records
  • Adoption case files
  • Records sealed by court order
  • Investigatory records compiled during active law enforcement investigations
  • Records whose disclosure would endanger an individual’s safety
  • Certain mental health and substance abuse records
  • Personnel files and deliberative advisory materials

For records that are withheld, requesters may challenge the denial through the Indiana Public Access Counselor or seek judicial review. The Indiana Judicial Branch’s Public Records guidance explains which court documents are available through MyCase and how to pursue records that require direct clerk requests.
