LaGrange County, maintains an extensive collection of official court records covering the full spectrum of civil, criminal, family, and probate proceedings. These records — formally referred to as “case records” — document every significant event in a court proceeding, including motions, orders, transcripts, pleadings, summonses, affidavits, exhibits, and judgments. The LaGrange County Clerk’s Office serves as the primary custodian of these records and is the first point of contact for most public records requests.

Indiana residents and out-of-state requesters can locate publicly available court case information through official court clerk offices, public access terminals at the courthouse, and online tools. The state courts website at IndianaStateCourts.us can help direct users toward publicly available court case data across Indiana’s counties, including LaGrange County. Case information may also be found through the Indiana Judicial Branch, the county’s official website, and free online case search portals operated by the court system itself.

  • Plain copies: $1.00 per page
  • Certified copies: $1.00 per page, plus a $3.00 certification fee per document
  • Debit/credit card payments: A 3% convenience fee applies, with a minimum of $1.50

If the records are intended for legal use — such as court proceedings, employment applications, or Social Security matters — requesters should specifically ask for certified copies.

Are Court Records Public in LaGrange County?

Indiana operates under a presumption of openness for court records. The general rule is that any member of the public may inspect and obtain copies of court records unless a specific exemption applies. This framework is governed by two overlapping legal sources: Indiana Code § 5-14-3, commonly known as the Access to Public Records Act (APRA), and the Indiana Rules on Access to Court Records, which were adopted by the Indiana Supreme Court to create a comprehensive and unified set of access standards for the judicial branch.

Certain records are excluded from public access regardless of who requests them. In LaGrange County, the following categories are nonpublic or restricted:

  • Records deemed confidential by another Indiana statute, federal law, or court rule
  • Records sealed by a court order in a specific case
  • Juvenile delinquency and child in need of services (CHINS) proceeding records
  • Mental health treatment records
  • Drug or substance abuse program records
  • Pre-sentence investigation reports prepared for sentencing hearings
  • Adoption records and related proceedings
  • Custody evaluation reports submitted in family court matters
  • Complete Social Security Numbers of living individuals appearing in any document

It is also worth noting that Indiana courts maintain a second category of records called “Court Administrative Records”. These cover documents related to the internal management of the judicial branch — such as budget records, jury pool lists, local court rules, and statistical reports — rather than individual cases. These administrative records are generally public, but they are a distinct category from case records.

Individuals who believe they are entitled to access a confidential record under Administrative Rule 9(B) must present a valid photo ID when picking up those documents and must be prepared to demonstrate their legal basis for access.
