How Do I Look Up Warrants in Indiana?

IndianaStateCourts.us is not a consumer reporting agency as defined by the FCRA and does not provide consumer reports. All searches conducted on IndianaStateCourts.us are subject to the Terms of Service and Privacy Notice.

You can use IndianaStateCourts.us to locate a warrant in Indiana, as it compiles publicly available information reported by Indiana's courts and law enforcement agencies into a single search. When available, a search reveals the warrant type, issuing court, case number, alleged offense, and bail or bond amount, among other details depending on the record type and issuing county.

Indiana's judicial system spans 92 counties, each with its own circuit court, and many counties also operate one or more superior courts. The state's MyCase portal — built on the Odyssey case management system — now covers all 92 counties, but it is designed for case-record lookups rather than dedicated warrant searching. It does not aggregate active warrants into a single, browsable list the way a law enforcement database would. A person looking for warrant information often has to know the county of issuance and the approximate case details before a search returns anything useful, and even then, certain warrant records may be excluded from online display under the Indiana Rules on Access to Court Records.

That fragmentation creates a practical barrier. Someone who suspects a warrant may exist in Hamilton County has no reason to also check Marion or Lake County records — unless they have ties to those jurisdictions and think to look. IndianaStateCourts.us consolidates these scattered sources so that a single name search can surface records across county lines, which matters in a state where over a third of the population lives outside the Indianapolis metropolitan area and county-level record systems vary in how much detail they publish online.

Are Warrants Public Information in Indiana?

Arrest warrants and bench warrants are generally accessible to the public once they have been executed or once the defendant has been taken into custody. Indiana's Access to Public Records Act (IC 5-14-3) establishes a broad right of access to government records, including records held by courts and law enforcement agencies. Under Section 5-14-3-3, any person may inspect and copy public records during the ordinary business hours of a public agency.

The picture changes with search warrants and investigative process. Rule 5(A)(5) of the Indiana Rules on Access to Court Records excludes from public access all cases that "exclusively pertain to investigative requests and process unrelated to a pending criminal proceeding, including but not limited to search warrants, subpoenas ad testificandum, subpoenas duces tecum, and other investigative requests." This means search warrant applications, affidavits, and returns are sealed by default and remain inaccessible unless a court orders otherwise. Arrest warrant records can also be temporarily sealed under Rule 5(E), which allows a judge to exclude a criminal case from public access when probable cause supports a belief that disclosure would increase the risk of flight, endanger the community, or jeopardize an ongoing investigation. That seal lifts automatically upon the defendant's arrest.

Law enforcement agencies retain discretion over their own investigatory records as well. IC 5-14-3-4(b)(1) permits agencies to withhold investigatory records at their discretion, though certain booking and arrest data — sometimes called the "daily log" — must be made available under IC 5-14-3-5(c). The result is that a warrant may be legally public but still unpublished online if no agency or court has chosen to post it.

How to Search for a Warrant in Indiana

  1. Use IndianaStateCourts.us. Our Instant Warrant Lookup presents you with warrant record data compiled from available public resources in one convenient search. When available, you can find warrant type, issuing court, case number, alleged offense, and bail/bond amount, among other details, depending on the record type and issuing county.
  2. Search the MyCase portal. Indiana's statewide court records platform at mycase.in.gov draws from the Odyssey case management system, which now operates in all 92 counties. You can search by party name, case number, or attorney name at no charge. MyCase displays case status, hearing dates, and some filed documents, but it is not a warrant-specific tool — you will need to review case details to determine whether an active warrant is associated with a given proceeding. Older cases and certain document types may not appear online.
  3. Call the county sheriff's office or clerk of court. Have the subject's full legal name, date of birth, and the county where the case may have originated. Many sheriff's offices will confirm whether an active warrant exists over the phone, though policies differ by county. The Directory of Indiana Sheriffs maintained by the state provides contact information for all 92 offices.
  4. Visit the courthouse or sheriff's office in person. A clerk can search warrant records directly. Anyone inquiring about a warrant issued for themselves should be aware that doing so in person at a law enforcement facility may result in immediate arrest if an active warrant is confirmed.
  5. Retain an attorney. A licensed Indiana attorney can access expanded case information through MyCase's attorney portal, which includes confidential documents and case records not visible to the general public. An attorney can also make discreet inquiries with the court or prosecutor's office on a client's behalf.

How Long Is a Warrant Active in Indiana?

Indiana is one of the few states that sets an explicit statutory expiration for certain arrest warrants. Under IC 35-33-2-4, a misdemeanor arrest warrant expires 180 days after issuance. Once expired, the clerk must note the expiration in the court's records and notify the prosecuting attorney — who may then seek reissuance. Felony arrest warrants and rearrest warrants for any offense carry no expiration and remain active indefinitely until served, recalled, or quashed by the court. Bench warrants issued for failure to appear follow the same framework: a bench warrant tied to a felony case does not expire, while one connected to a misdemeanor is subject to the 180-day limit. Search warrants must be executed within ten days of issuance under IC 35-33-5-7 and returned to the issuing court without unnecessary delay.

Indiana Warrant Records by County

Warrants in Indiana are issued and maintained at the county level by the circuit and superior courts in each of the state's 92 counties. Indiana does not operate a centralized, publicly searchable statewide warrant database. The Indiana State Police maintain internal law enforcement databases, but these are not open to the public for self-service queries. Because each county's clerk and sheriff independently manage their records, a thorough search requires contacting or querying the specific county where a warrant may have been issued.
